Sometimes the choices you have for installing windows in your Commerce-area home can seem overwhelming. There are single-hung windows; double-hung windows; casement windows; awning windows—and the options go on!
Do you really need that many choices? And what’s the difference anyway? If you take a look at the two top windows in the picture here they really don’t look all that different. Why chose a double-hung window over a single-hung one?
While they may look a lot alike, there is a difference. With a single-hung window, only the bottom pane opens to let in fresh air. With a double-hung window, both the top and bottom panes open. Why does that matter? If you have a room where small children are, you may want to open only the top pane. That let’s fresh air in, but the bottom stays closed so that little ones aren’t exposed to the danger of falling out.
Casement windows offer a different kind of functionality. Because they are hinged on the side, they open outward like a door does. That makes them a good choice if you’re looking for ventilation in areas where there tends to be a lot of wind. You can still crack a window open to let in air without having to worry about gusts blowing things around inside. The screens are set inside the window and keep debris (and bugs) out.
An awning window can be a great choice for an over-the-kitchen- sink window. These fixtures are hinged at the top and also open outward. Even if it’s raining, you can still let fresh air in while keeping the moisture out.
If you’re looking for full-window ventilation, a glider window is a good choice because the window slides open to expose the full height of the window. These windows are popular for areas that open onto a walkway or a deck because the open window doesn’t stick out into that space.
If you have smaller spaces where you’d like to let in light and a bit of fresh air, you might want to check out either tilt-and- turn windows or hopper windows. The tilt-and- turn operates very much the same as a casement window, while the hopper window opens to the inside at the top.
